Cap: 2-12 cm in diameter, convex to obtuse expanding to nearly plane with age. Dark red to purple-red to pinkish fibrillose scales, fading to yellow rarely with bluish tones.
Stem: 3-10cm in length. Typically equal, sometimes enlarged near the bottom. Purple to yellowish often with bluish stains on the mycelium attached to the base.
Gills: Notched to adnate. Yellow, becoming orange with spores.
Spores: 5.5-8.5 by 3.5-4.5 micrometers, bright rusty orange.
Comments: Formerly described on this site as the similar Magic Blue Gym, Gymnopilus aeruginosus. A completely yellow variant has been observed growing in close proximity to the striking purple colored form.
