Assorted Spore Print Greeting Cards (Five Pack) by Valerie Palmer

Although mushroom spores all appear to have a different shape under the microscope (a way of identifying the various species), to the naked eye they seem like very fine, coloured dust, that can easily be blown or brushed away.

A 'spore print' is made by gently laying a mushroom, or any kind of fungi, face down on paper, or other suitable surface, and leaving it to drop its spores over a period of time. This may be anywhere from 10 minutes to 36 hours! If left undisturbed (and here patience has its rewards!) the print will gradually take on the characteristics of the underside of the mushroom. ie - fine lines for gills, spots for tubes or 'teeth,' ect. - in beautiful earth tone colours that will range from white to yellow, through many shades of brown, to grey and black. This process must often be repeated several times until a print is complete in its composition. 'Val' often incorporates other natural materials into her prints, such as grasses, leaves and flowers, etc., or she may occasionally add pastel or charcoal to enhance a print. Mushroom dyes, sometimes used to colour wools and paper, are permanent and do not fade.

Valerie Jeanne Palmer was born and raised in England, and emigrated to Canada in the late 1950's. An artist, poet and nature-lover, she now lives with her husband Don on a farm in Peace River, Alberta. The wealth and variety of fungi she finds there, from Spring to Fall, allow her to pursue her unique hobby of 'Mushroom Magic.'
